Schnauzer mini
At Valles Pasiegos Kennel, we also breed Mini Schnauzers. They are brave, stubborn, and loyal dogs.
History of the Mini Schnauzer Breed
The Schnauzer (or “beard” in German) originated in Germany in the late 1880s. These dogs are brave, stubborn, and loyal. Their initial tasks were hunting and guarding, as they have highly sensitive hearing. They belong to the Terrier family, which makes them dogs that love walking, inspecting, and exploring. What are they like? They are compact, strong dogs with character, as they are stubborn, hypoallergenic as they barely shed hair, and their appearance with their beard and, depending on the haircut and type of fur, sometimes looks as though they are wearing a skirt.
There are various sizes of Schnauzers, each with its own characteristics and personality. In Europe, there are Mini, Standard, and Giant Schnauzers. In America, they additionally include Toy and Teacup Schnauzers. At Valles Pasiegos, we breed Mini and Toy Schnauzers.
For a long time, Bolonkas were companions to Russian high society, and their owners appreciated their loving company and compact size. The Russian Revolution and the turbulent times that followed almost led to the extinction of the breed, but dedicated dog lovers worked to preserve it. Although the breed is not as globally known as others like the French Bulldog or the Pomeranian, Bolonkas have gained popularity in recent years due to their charm and friendly personality.
Distinctive Physical Characteristics of Mini Schnauzers
- Mini Schnauzers are compact and muscular, presenting a straight build (their width and length are almost equal).
- They have long beards, bushy eyebrows, and long hair on their legs, making them appear like old men or Santa Claus, depending on who describes them. This breed is one of the hypoallergenic dog breeds, especially in Mini and Toy sizes, as they do not shed hair.
- Their height at the withers can range between 30-35 cm, with males weighing 5-9 kg and females weighing 5-8 kg.
- They have a fairly long head, a well-gathered trunk, strong and powerful limbs, and an overall appearance of great vitality, which indicates intelligence and alertness.
- The type of coat can be either coarse or abundant and silky, depending on their European or American origin.
- Coarse fur, often referred to as "wire coat," requires proper stripping.
- For silky fur, like coarse fur, they need grooming at least once a month, along with brushing and maintenance to remain in optimal condition.
